Dr Methley has worked for NHS services for ten years and has substantial experience supporting children/young people and adults, their families, and health care/school teams. She specialises in neuropsychology, neurodivergence, and supporting people who have experienced traumatic events (both single incident and complex trauma). She has worked within specialist brain injury and mental health services across England.
She is passionate about helping people to make sense of their experiences, increase their confidence and hope for the future, and find ways to build a life that includes the things most important to them. This includes providing both assessments and interventions for people who feel they may, or are diagnosed with, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD, and people living with acquired brain injuries.
Dr Methley is an experienced researcher and completed her PhD on the mental health support needed for people with multiple sclerosis. She has presented at national and international conferences and is an author of 16 academic publications and 14 practice based publications for clinicians. She has recently published a textbook on the use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for people with Acquired Brain Injury for Routledge and co-authored a Cochrane review on psychological interventions for dementia.
She is trained in a wide variety of therapeutic models including CBT, ACT, Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR), schema therapy and functional analysis for understanding the causes and consequences of behaviour. Dr Methley is a registered practitioner psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC, PYL34737).
